A heritage
Come and stroll along the alleyways and quays. Consider for a moment the waterlevels that record the great floods of 1910, 1924 and 1955, and you will sense an enduring testament to the barge culture that marks our authenticity. Saint-Mammès remains today a true "village of mariniers".
The many Neolithic or Carolingian traces uncovered in the commune attest of a very ancient settlement in this area, undoubtedly owing to its position at a river crossroad. A hamlet of Moret-on-Loing up until the Revolution, Saint-Mammès is centred around an XIth century Benedictine priory, of which only the original chapel survives today.
